Talon Yearbook Policies (Click here for a PDF)
2007-2008
02-06-08
General Philosophy
The Talon yearbook is a student-produced publication, a product of a journalism class
and extracurricular involvement. The Talon yearbook attempts to capture the spirit,
heart and talent of students, faculty, staff and parents through photographs.
Additionally, it serves to inform and entertain its audience in a broad, fair, and accurate
manner on all subjects that affect its readers. The student body 5th -12th constitutes the
primary audience for the book; secondary audiences include PK-4th grades, faculty, staff,
administration, parents, and other members of the Faithwest Community. The content
of the book focuses on involvement and participation of the majority of the students.
Members of the journalism community (to include TAPPS and other entities that judge
Talon’s content) constitute a tertiary audience.
The Talon staff allows and encourages constructive criticism of any part of the book,
before or after publication. However, final authority for the content of the book rests
solely in the hands of yearbook journalism students. The administrators of Faith West
Academy (the publisher), rely on the adviser and staff to make content decisions. Each
publication reflects stories of interest and of intellect. No material, opinionated or
otherwise, will be printed that is libelous, irresponsible, advocates illegal activities, or
that the editor or adviser deem in poor taste.
Individual Portraits
All students, faculty, and staff must have their portraits made with the official
photographer in order to be included in the yearbook. By having portraits taken by the
same photographer, the yearbook staff can be assured of the highest quality
reproduction.
The school provides an administrative report of enrollees on January 15th of each school
year to determine an accurate count of the student population. Names of students and
photos (taken during scheduled photo sessions) will be compared with this report to
determine those students receiving a notation “not pictured” for the portrait section of
the yearbook.
Exceptions/Denials
Any student who is expelled or no longer attending Faith West at the time of the
aforementioned administrative report, will not be included in the portrait section of the
yearbook.
Other Photography
Photos submitted to the staff must be of high quality (preferably in digital format of 300
ppi or higher). If prints are submitted to the yearbook staff every effort will be made to
return them after scanning, but not guaranteed.
All photography taken by Faith West Academy to document activities is considered
property of Faith West and images can be published in the Talon yearbook without
written consent. If a parent does not wish to have their child represented in the
yearbook the proper form, denying consent must be turned in to administration by the
first day of school.
Book Sales
In grades 5-12 the cost of the Talon has been included in your initial book fee.
Additional copies or purchases to all other students, teachers, and public sales will be
charged a fair and reasonable fee, based on the cost of the book and contract
commitment deadlines each year. All checks are to be made payable to “Faith West
Academy” and addressed to Yearbook Order, Business Office.
In the months of May and June, yearbook orders will be posted on the website of Faith
West Academy to allow buyers to verify their orders. In the event your name is not
posted on the website, or at the time of distribution, it means there is no record of your
purchase. The responsibility for providing proof of purchase rests with the buyer. Faith
West does not keep copies of individual checks; the buyer must supply the Business
Office a photocopy of both sides of the cancelled check.
Paid orders taken after April 30 will be placed on a waiting listing and not guaranteed a
book.
Distribution
Talon will make every effort to have the books delivered on the first day of the school
year. Books not claimed after the first 3 weeks of delivery will be made available for sales
that on the waiting list.
It is the responsibility of a graduating seniors and students no longer attending Faith
West to make contact with Talon adviser to arrange delivery at the expense of the buyer.
(Exception: Foreign Exchange students Faith West will incur the cost.)
Advertising
All advertising (Senior Ads) accepted by the staff must meet the same guidelines as
editorial content. It is the intent not to sell business advertising, but in the event the
business advertising is taken, additional pages would be added to the book to
accommodate this practice.
Obituaries
Should a student, faculty, or staff member die anytime during the school year, the staff
will treat the death in a tasteful manner. The portrait of the individual will appear as it
would under normal circumstances with no emphasis. Any other space given in
remembrance will appear at an appropriate location in the book.

Faith West Academy Students Win 2007 TAPPS 4A Journalism Awards: The Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) awarded Faith West Academy’s Journalism newspaper Staff second place in the 2007 statewide contest for Newspaper Publishing.  The Flyer staff team includes FWA juniors Wade Brokmeyer, Harrison Campbell and Sean Sanders who were recognized for their excellence.  Each team member gained knowledge and expertise in all phases of newspaper publishing.  FWA Journalism instructor, George Jolliff says of these winners:  “Their dedication, diligence and creativity resulted in excellent newspaper publications for Faith West.  Each publication reflected stories of interest and of intellect. We are pleased of their accomplishments”.
